Get Familiarized with Poker
Poker may seem like a too serious game for many online casino reviews players. There are too many demands on the poker player in order to beat the game. That is, the player must know his strategies, his poker odds, and his playing statistics. At the same time, a poker should know how to bluff and how to change pace. With all these mental tasks being demanded from a poker player during the game, is there any room left for creativity and fun?
The answer is “absolutely yes”. Poker is a casino game that also involves creativity. In fact the names of poker hands have been fancy names that are derived from varied aspects of a human’s existence, such as history, literature, and popular culture. Here are some of those fancy names:
Nuts – Who would be nuts enough to call a combination of five cards as “Nuts”? Apparently, this name is oxymoronic because a “nuts” refers to an extremely strong hand that cannot be beaten at any round of the poker game. Thus, when a poker player smiles and says that he’s got nuts, he was not referring to any food or to his mental condition.
Bullets – This obviously does not refer to those things that come out of guns or those little images created by layout artists. The “bullets refer to any pair of two Aces. If one will extend his imagination, one may realize that indeed, the suits of Aces appear like bullets. And since Aces are relatively strong cards, the name is appropriate. If one wanted to be a little less violent, one may call a pair of Aces as “American Airlines”.
Ladies – When a poker player reveals his cards on the last round and states that he’s got “ladies”, he is actually describing his cards that are a pair of Queens.
Cowboys – Like the above name, one can deduce that cowboys refer to a pair of Kings, and the crowns of these Kings are considered the cowboy hats.
Ducks – The term “ducks” is a slight variation of the term “deuces”, which refer to a pair of Two cards. In most variants of poker, except for Lowball and Razz, the Two card is considered the lowest card.
Walking Sticks – This term evolved from the suggestive image of the number 7. The short horizontal line is where the hand is placed and the long diagonal line, which is almost vertical, is the stick in itself. Thus, the “walking sticks” refer to a pair of Sevens.
Dead Man’s Hand – This refers to Two Pair which is composed of two Aces and two Eights. The term for it is an allusion to history in which a man known as Wild Bill Hickok was playing poker when someone shot him in the back. He was holding such a Two Pair.
There are still more fancy names for other card combinations. A poker player should strive to become familiar with such fancy names so that he will be more alert during a poker game.
