Poker Concepts for Begginers

One of the most important skills that poker players wanted to acquire and master is “knowing the opponents”. When a player has pegged the poker personality of an opponent, he already knows how to respond to and how to deal with this particular opponent. In a word, he has a great chance in beating this one opponent.

Ironically, the poker table is that one place where sometimes the silences reign for long minutes and the conversations are strained and unrevealing. In such a situation, how can one poker player know all the five or six opponents before him?

A poker player need not become a psychologist in order to accomplish the task of knowing the opponents. All he needs to do is to fit his opponents into one of the six types of poker players. When this is done, then he will know precisely what his opponents are up to.

Here are the six types of poker players

1. The Fish

The easiest poker player to deal with is called the “Fish”. This player, as its name implies, becomes the “source of nutrition” for the pockets of the better players. This means that the Fish is relatively easy to defeat, unless this Fish invented the word “luck”. The Fish has no solid concept about the technique of bluffing because he is focused on his own hand only. When he has a weak hand, he folds. And when he has a strong hand, he calls.

2. The Weak-Tight

This poker player is not reckless with his chips. He does not want to lose them. And this attitude gives the impression that he is a cautious player. This is why he is described as tight, which means, tight in handling his chips (or money). Unfortunately, he focuses only on his own cards. And this makes him a weak player. This will make it easy to remove the pot from out of his reach by simply bluffing him.

3. The Sheriff

This poker player has characteristics in between the Fish and the Weak-Tight. This means that he has more knowledge than the Fish and less tight with his chips than the Weak-Tight. He will also suspect that his opponents are just bluffing their way to the pot. With that suspicion constantly in his consciousness, he may call a bluff when he has a slightly strong hand.

4. The Tilting Player

Next to the Fish, the easiest type of poker player to beat is the Tilting player. This poker player, as the name implies, plays recklessly. This player may become reckless or may tilt right after winning big or losing big. Then, he bets without any strategy at all.

5. The Aggressive-Tight

This poker player is a relatively good player, but he is not yet an expert at reading his opponents. This means that he can be turned into either a Weak-Tight or a Sheriff by using a poker technique called “changing pace”.

6. The Hyper-Aggressive

This poker player is a challenge because one cannot tell if he really has a strong hand or just bluffing his way to the pot. Obviously, he is a good poker player. The technique of “changing pace” may be useful in dealing with him.
