Cascade Locks Send Gov. Kulongski And Rep Greg Walden Giant Thank You Cards For Casino Support

Giant thank-you cards were received by Gov. Ted Kulongski and U.S. Representative Greg Walden for their unfaltering show of support to a tribal gambling casino in Cascade Locks.

On November 14, tribal leaders and government leaders from the rural community held a congratulatory reception at the Pavilion in Port Marine Park in their honor.

Many residents also showed up during the afternoon to offer their thanks and congratulations to the two newly re-elected officials. The expression of thanks was added to existing notes from tribal members written at another event on the Central Oregon reservation the day before.

"Opponents to the casino made it an election issue by spending more than $1 million on negative campaigning this year. But both of these gentlemen held firm with their support and we are very grateful," said tribal spokesperson Greg Leo.

The tribe also said that similar thank you cards will also be given to Rep. Patti Smith and Sen. Rick Metsger. Cascade Locks and tribal officials held firm in their belief that based on the electoral outcome, the voters came out in favor of the casino.

"I think a majority of the electorate are looking forward to the tourism-based vision and economic growth that this casino will bring," said Leo.

Leo said that the Department of Interior will likely decide on the proposed casino within 2007.
